According to officials, the first three letters of the PAN represent a particular series assigned by the department. The fourth character indicates the category of the taxpayer—‘P’ stands for an individual, ‘C’ for a company, ‘H’ for a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), and ‘A’ for an Association of Persons (AOP). The fifth letter of the PAN corresponds to the first letter of the holder’s surname or last name. The following four digits are sequential numbers ranging from 0001 to 9999, while the final letter is known as the check digit, which helps verify the validity of the PAN.
