Decoding the 10-Character PAN Number
Hyderabad (Same Day): The Income Tax Department has clarified that the 10-character alphanumeric number printed on every Permanent Account Number (PAN) card carries a specific meaning and is not a random combination of letters and digits.
According to officials, the first three letters of the PAN represent a particular series assigned by the department. The fourth character indicates the category of the taxpayer—‘P’ stands for an individual, ‘C’ for a company, ‘H’ for a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), and ‘A’ for an Association of Persons (AOP).
The fifth letter of the PAN corresponds to the first letter of the holder’s surname or last name. The following four digits are sequential numbers ranging from 0001 to 9999, while the final letter is known as the check digit, which helps verify the validity of the PAN.
Officials urged taxpayers to safeguard their PAN and ensure its correct usage in all financial transactions.
