Only High Courts, Supreme Court can order life imprisonment till death: Karnataka High Court

Image
Bengaluru (Same Day): The Karnataka High Court has ruled that the power to impose a sentence of “life imprisonment till the end of natural life, without remission” rests exclusively with the High Courts and the Supreme Court, and not with trial courts such as Sessions Courts. The observation was made while hearing a criminal appeal arising out of a case from Shivamogga district, in which a Sessions Court had sentenced the accused, Rudresh, to life imprisonment till death for the murder of a minor child, explicitly denying the benefit of remission. Setting aside that portion of the sentence, the High Court held that a Sessions Court lacks the jurisdiction to prescribe a punishment that forecloses the statutory right of remission. The court clarified that while trial courts are empowered to award life imprisonment, they cannot direct that the convict shall remain in prison for the remainder of his natural life without any possibility of sentence reduction. The Bench noted that the autho...

Reacting to Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju’s announcement that no penalty or legal action would be taken for three months against wakf functionaries unable to complete entries on the portal, Mr. Bandagi Badshah said the move offered little real relief. The Minister had earlier ruled out any extension of the deadline and advised wakf functionaries to approach the respective Wakf Tribunals if they required more time, stating that the temporary waiver of penalties was granted on “humanitarian grounds”. Baramati: From drought-hit hinterland to a national model of development

Image
Baramati, Maharashtra (Same Day): Baramati, a constituency now frequently mentioned in national discourse, offers a striking case study in long-term, planned development. Once synonymous with parched lands, chronic drought and large-scale migration, the region has, over the decades, transformed into one of Maharashtra’s most developed rural-urban clusters. Until the late 1960s, Baramati’s economy was marked by distress agriculture and acute drinking water shortages. Seasonal migration to Mumbai and Pune was common as local livelihoods failed to sustain families. The turning point came in 1967, when Sharad Pawar assumed public office and placed water management at the centre of development planning. A network of canals, check dams and watershed programmes was gradually established, significantly improving groundwater levels and converting arid tracts into cultivable land. This water security laid the foundation for agricultural diversification and higher productivity. Baramati went on ...
