Call to Elect Chairperson from Marginalised Communities in Bar Council Polls
Hyderabad (Same Day): The Lawyers Forum for Social Justice (LFSJ), Telangana State unit, along with the National Samata Lawyers Organisation, has appealed to advocates to elect a chairperson from the marginalised sections in the forthcoming Telangana Bar Council elections scheduled for January 30.
Addressing a joint meeting held at the Press Club, Basheerbagh, here on Tuesday, former Advocate General of Telangana B.S. Prasad, LFSJ Telangana State Secretary General Samala Ravinder, and National Samata Lawyers Organisation national president Putta Padma Rao underscored the need to strengthen social justice within statutory legal bodies.
They noted that as many as 203 candidates were contesting the elections and urged advocates to exercise their franchise freely, without succumbing to inducements or confusion, and to vote for candidates with integrity and a demonstrated commitment to social justice.
Recalling past trends, the speakers pointed out that in the erstwhile undivided Andhra Pradesh, only one member from marginalised communities was elected to the 25-member Bar Council. Following the formation of Telangana and sustained efforts by social justice organisations, representation from these sections had increased to 10 members, they said.
The leaders highlighted the role played by the Lawyers Forum for Social Justice in advocating inclusive representation in key legal appointments, including those of High Court judges, the Advocate General, Government Pleaders, Public Prosecutors, and Assistant Government Pleaders. They said the forum had taken the issue up to the Supreme Court, resulting in broader participation of marginalised communities in such appointments.
Warning against what they described as attempts by certain sections to dilute social justice through misleading assurances, the speakers asserted that they would no longer tolerate discrimination or exclusion of backward and weaker sections across sectors.
Describing the vote as the most powerful democratic tool available, they appealed to advocates to elect deserving men and women from marginalised communities in large numbers and ensure that the next Bar Council chairperson is from these sections.
The meeting was attended by several advocates and social activists, including Padma Rao, Putta Raghunath, Sofia Begum, Uma Rani, Vishal, G. Shailaja, Syed Yasar, Sudhakar, Nagula Srinivas Yadav, Bandaru Shailaja, Gujja Krishna (BC JAC working chairman), among others.
