Patients Forced to Buy Medicines, Carry Bottles at Unani Hospital Charminar: Lubna Sarwat Raise Alarm

Hyderabad (Same Day):
Patients visiting the Government Unani Hospital in Charminar are reportedly being compelled to purchase a majority of their prescribed medicines from private pharmacies, with activists claiming that over 60% of essential Unani medicines are unavailable at the facility.

Adding to the woes, patients are also being asked to bring their own empty bottles to collect traditional halwa-based medicines—a practice described as both inconvenient and degrading by social activists and patient families.

Dr. Lubna Sarwath, social and environmental activist and member of the Indian National Congress (INC), has formally raised the grievance with the Hyderabad District Collector on Wednesday, demanding immediate redressal. “This is a public hospital meant to serve the underprivileged. Patients should not have to bear the financial burden of purchasing medicines or bring containers to access prescribed formulations. It reflects a breakdown in basic public health services,” she said.

Sources within the hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed shortages of several frequently prescribed herbal and compound medications, attributing the situation to delayed procurement and supply chain issues.

The Nizamia Unani Hospital in Charminar is one of the oldest and most prominent institutions offering traditional medicine in Hyderabad. The latest complaints have sparked concerns about the state of AYUSH infrastructure in Telangana, with calls growing louder for the Health Department to step in and ensure uninterrupted supply of medicines and basic amenities.

Citizens and health activists are urging the Telangana State Government and the Directorate of AYUSH to take immediate corrective measures and conduct an audit of inventory management at the hospital.

A response from the hospital administration and health officials is awaited.
