Nomadic Muslims flag ‘serious flaws’ in BC-E population data: Shabbir

Hyderabad (Same Day):
Alleging major discrepancies in the Backward Classes (BC) population data released by the Telangana government, M.D. Shabbir, founder and State working president of the Telangana State Nomadic Muslim Tribes Association (BC-E 1–14), has accused authorities of significantly underreporting the population of nomadic Muslim communities.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Shabbir said the official figures were “far from reality,” particularly for several sub-groups within the BC-E category. He claimed that communities with substantial presence on the ground have been shown as having only a few hundred or a few thousand members in the government records.

He cited multiple instances to support his claims. Communities such as Achchukattalavandlu, Singali and Singamvallu were reported to have a population of just 4,532, which, he argued, was lower than their numbers in a single mandal. Similarly, Fakir, Budbudaka Fakir and Darvesh groups were shown with a population of 46,349, whereas their actual numbers exceed four lakh, he asserted.

Mr. Shabbir further alleged that some communities, including Bonthé Wale, were not mentioned at all in the survey, raising concerns about the credibility and thoroughness of the enumeration process. In other cases, he said, populations of groups such as Garadi Muslims and Turkasha had been drastically reduced in official records.

He also pointed to the large population recorded under the Shaik/Sheikh category — over 27 lakh — and alleged that several sub-castes may have been broadly classified under this single category, leading to distorted data.

Highlighting the socio-economic status of nomadic Muslim communities, Mr. Shabbir said that even as per government indicators, these groups remain among the most backward in terms of education, livelihood and social standing. He warned that inaccurate population figures could result in denial of welfare benefits and reservation opportunities.

The association has demanded an immediate review and correction of the data through a scientific and transparent process. It also called for a special package for the most backward nomadic Muslim communities and measures to simplify the issuance of caste certificates.

Warning of protests, Mr. Shabbir said the community would launch State-wide agitations if the government fails to address their concerns.
