Encroachments in Jalpally, Lake Beds Raise Alarm Among Activists
Hyderabad (Same Day): Allegations of large-scale encroachments on roads, nalas and water bodies in Jalpally and surrounding areas have triggered concern among activists and local Congress leaders, who have accused officials of inaction despite repeated complaints.
The issue came under discussion at a meeting held at Gandhi Bhawan, where social activist and ecological economist Dr Lubna Sarwath reviewed maps and documents related to the encroachments.
The meeting was attended by Jalpally social activist Sahebzadi Raheemunnisa, Mohammed Hamed, and Mahila Congress representatives.
Activists pointed out that Sadath Nagar and adjoining areas are particularly vulnerable as they lie between two heavily encroached lakes — Bandlaguda Surram Cheruvu and Shaheennagar Yerra Kunta. Concerns were raised over alleged constructions within the Full Tank Level (FTL) limits of the lakes, which could exacerbate flooding risks.
Despite complaints being lodged with various departments, including the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), activists alleged that no concrete action has been taken so far. They claimed that officials may be hesitant to act due to pressure from influential encroachers.
Some officials were contacted during the meeting, and discussions were held on possible measures to address the issue. Activists expressed hope that coordinated efforts with authorities would help resolve the encroachments and prevent further environmental damage.
Dr Sarwath stressed the urgent need to protect water bodies and public infrastructure, warning that continued neglect could lead to serious ecological and civic consequences in the area.
