GST Deputy Commissioner Caught Accepting ₹6 Lakh Bribe by Karnataka Lokayukta
Bengaluru (Same Day): In a significant anti-corruption operation, the Karnataka Lokayukta officials on Tuesday arrested a Deputy Commissioner of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department, Bharath Hegde, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹6 lakh from a businessman.
According to Lokayukta sources, the officer had allegedly demanded a total bribe of ₹10 lakh in exchange for “helping” the businessman evade a GST liability of approximately ₹60 lakh. Acting on a complaint filed by the businessman, Lokayukta officials laid a trap and caught the GST officer red-handed while accepting part of the demanded amount.
Officials said that GST officer had assured the complainant that he would manipulate official records and provide relief in the pending tax assessment, thereby reducing or nullifying the tax burden. Unwilling to comply with the illegal demand, the businessman approached the Lokayukta authorities, who then initiated a covert operation.
The trap was executed after due verification of the complaint, and the accused officer was apprehended at the time of accepting ₹6 lakh, officials confirmed. Subsequent searches were carried out at his residence and office to gather further evidence.
A case has been registered under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and the accused has been taken into custody. Lokayukta officials stated that further investigation is underway to ascertain if more individuals were involved in the case or if similar offences had been committed in the past.
The incident once again brings into focus concerns over corruption within revenue departments, with authorities reiterating their commitment to act firmly against such practices.
