Journalists Seek Parity in Cashless Health Scheme

Hyderabad (Same Day):
Former Media Academy Chairman Allam Narayana on Tuesday urged the State government to extend cashless health cards to journalists on par with government employees, warning of an agitation if the demand is not met.

Addressing a press conference organised by the Telangana Union of Working Journalists (TUWJ) at the Somajiguda Press Club, Mr. Narayana said journalists had earlier secured health card benefits after the formation of Telangana and questioned the present government’s stance on the issue. He recalled that the previous dispensation, led by former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, had implemented cashless health cards for journalists through G.O. Ms. No. 64, enabling treatment at corporate hospitals.

Mr. Narayana said the scheme had provided substantial medical assistance to journalists and added that the cards continued to be valid at institutions such as the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). He expressed concern that the recent Cabinet announcement on the cashless health card scheme for employees did not mention journalists.

Alleging that promises were made ahead of the Assembly elections by the Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy regarding enhanced welfare measures for journalists had not materialised, Mr. Narayana criticised what he termed as cuts in accreditation cards and the discontinuation of health benefits. “Are journalists invisible to the government?” he asked, calling for immediate implementation of the scheme.

TUWJ State general secretary Askani Maruti Sagar alleged that the government is adopting a “discriminatory approach” towards journalists. He demanded restoration of the cashless health card scheme and warned of protests across the State if corrective measures were not taken.

Mr. Sagar also raised the issue of accident insurance, stating that the ₹5 lakh policy was earlier implemented for journalists under G.O. Ms. No. 22 had not been renewed. He urged the government to pay the pending premium and continue the coverage.

Several TUWJ office-bearers and representatives of journalists’ bodies were present at the press meet.
