Accreditation cards valid till April 30, 2026: Telangana High Court Government assures interim relief; detailed response sought on contentious G.O.s

Hyderabad (Same Day):
The validity of accreditation cards issued to journalists in Telangana has been extended till April 30, 2026, following an assurance by the State government before the Telangana High Court on Thursday.

The submission was made during the hearing of a writ petition filed by the Telangana Urdu Working Journalists Federation (TUWJF), challenging G.O. Ms. No. 252 and the amended G.O. Ms. No. 103 relating to the issuance and regulation of media accreditation cards.

The Federation contended that certain provisions introduced through the revised Government Orders adversely affected the professional functioning of journalists and curtailed access to facilities traditionally extended to accredited media personnel. It argued that the amendments were brought in without adequate consultation with stakeholders and had led to uncertainty among working journalists across the State.

Appearing for the petitioner, advocate Barkat Ali Khan submitted that the changes in eligibility criteria and procedural norms had created practical difficulties for reporters, particularly those working in small and medium publications. He urged the court to grant interim protection to ensure that no journalist was denied access to official programmes and institutions pending adjudication of the matter.

Responding to the submissions, the Special Advocate General informed the court that the government had decided to extend the validity of the existing accreditation cards up to April 30, 2026, to avoid disruption to journalistic activities. The assurance was recorded by the Bench.

Taking note of the statement, the High Court directed the State to file a comprehensive counter affidavit addressing the objections raised against G.O. 252 and the amended G.O. 103. The matter has been posted for further hearing after four weeks.

With the interim arrangement in place, accredited journalists will continue to access government events and official facilities without interruption until the next date of hearing.

TUWJF general secretary Syed Ghouse Mohiuddin welcomed the extension but described it as “temporary relief”, stating that the Federation would pursue the case until what it termed as “structural concerns” in the revised accreditation framework were resolved.
