Government must address Chenchu issues on priority: Kavitha

Achampet (Same Day):
Telangana Jagruti president K. Kavitha on Sunday urged the State government to take a comprehensive and humanitarian approach to resolve the long-pending problems of the Chenchu tribal community living in the Nallamala forest region.

As part of the Jagruti Janambata programme, Ms. Kavitha visited the Appapur Chenchu Penta in the Achampet Assembly constituency. She personally interacted with Chenchu families at their habitations, enquiring about their living conditions, health, and day-to-day challenges.

Ms. Kavitha sought details about the traditional lifestyle of the Chenchus in the Nallamala forests and the difficulties they face, particularly during medical emergencies and other critical situations. She also distributed new clothes to the community members and assured them of her continued efforts for their development and welfare.

Highlighting a range of civic and livelihood-related issues, Ms. Kavitha said the Chenchus were being denied basic amenities despite being among the most vulnerable tribal groups. She pointed out that employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme was not being provided regularly, electricity supply was absent, and access to drinking water remained a major concern.

She further alleged that the Girijan Cooperative Corporation was not procuring products made by the Chenchus, depriving them of a vital source of income. Funds meant for tribal development through the Integrated Tribal Development Agencies (ITDAs) were not reaching the ground, she said. The lack of public transport facilities, including buses, and problems related to auto services were adding to their isolation.

Calling for immediate government intervention, Ms. Kavitha demanded that electricity, drinking water, employment opportunities and transport facilities be provided without further delay. “The Chenchu community deserves dignity, security and access to basic facilities. The government must act with urgency to ensure their rights and development,” she said.
