BC JAC warn of stir if local body polls are held without raising quotas
Hyderabad (Same Day): Backward Classes (BC) organisations on Wednesday warned the Telangana government against conducting Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) elections without enhancing BC reservations, stating that any such move would be met with large-scale protests, including a siege of the State Assembly.
Addressing a joint meeting of political parties and BC associations at the Press Club, Somajiguda, BC Joint Action Committee (JAC) chairman Jajula Srinivas Goud said the government should first implement the “Kamareddy Declaration” in a legally binding manner and take steps to increase BC reservations before announcing local body elections. He alleged that both the Centre and the State were evading responsibility on the issue, to the detriment of BC communities.
Mr. Goud urged the State government to facilitate a discussion on BC reservations during the ongoing Assembly session and to lead an all-party delegation to New Delhi to exert pressure on the Union government. He announced a series of agitations, including a State-level conference of BC sarpanches in January, a Statewide ‘rath yatra’ from the second week of February, and a massive public meeting in Hyderabad in April.
Former Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya said the issue of BC reservations had national implications and called for a united struggle by BC organisations across the country. Expressing confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to social justice, he said efforts would be made to seek an appointment with the Prime Minister to press for an increase in BC quotas.
Senior Congress leader V. Hanumantha Rao said the Congress would introduce a private member’s Bill in the upcoming Budget session of Parliament seeking enhanced BC reservations and appealed to all political parties to support the move. He said the passage of such a Bill would clearly reveal which parties stood with BC communities.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders C. Madhusudhana Chary and V. Srinivas Goud reiterated the party’s support for legally providing 42% reservations to BCs in education, employment, legislatures and government contracts, as promised earlier. They criticised both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for “passing the buck” on the issue.
Leaders of various political parties, BC associations, youth, women and student organisations participated in the meeting and underlined the need for a concerted political and legal strategy to secure enhanced reservations for Backward Classes.
