Are Hefty Traffic Fines the Right Way to Reduce Road Accidents?

Hyderabad (Same Day):
The steep traffic fines imposed in Dubai for rule violations have triggered a debate in India on whether similar measures could help curb the alarming rise in road accidents across the country.

In the UAE, particularly Dubai, traffic offences attract hefty penalties. Over speeding can invite a fine of around ₹73,500, jumping a red signal costs nearly ₹24,500, using a mobile phone while driving can lead to a fine of about ₹19,500, and not wearing a seat belt attracts a penalty of close to ₹9,800. Authorities there credit strict enforcement and surveillance for better road discipline and fewer fatal accidents.

In India, where road accidents claim thousands of lives every year, several citizens and road safety experts feel that imposing such heavy fines could act as a strong deterrent against reckless driving. They argue that fear of substantial penalties may encourage motorists to follow traffic rules more strictly.

However, others point out that fines alone may not be enough. Critics say Dubai’s traffic discipline is also the result of world-class road infrastructure, well-planned traffic systems and strict monitoring. They argue that before introducing steep penalties, Indian cities need to improve road quality, signage and overall traffic management.

The discussion has once again brought road safety into focus, underlining the need for a balanced approach that combines better infrastructure, public awareness and effective enforcement, rather than relying solely on higher fines.
