TUWJ Calls for Statewide Maha Dharna on December 3... Alleges government apathy towards long-pending welfare demands

Hyderabad (Same Day):
Accusing the Telangana government of persistent apathy towards the welfare and professional needs of journalists, the Telangana State Union of Working Journalists (TUWJ) has announced a Maha Dharna on December 3 in Hyderabad. The protest will be held at 10 a.m. in front of the Office of the Commissioner, Information Department, Masab Tank, Hyderabad.

In a statement, TUWJ State President K. Virahat Ali and General Secretary K. Ramnarayana said that despite playing a crucial role during the Telangana movement, journalists remain one of the most neglected sections in the 12 years since statehood. Basic facilities—such as health insurance, accreditation benefits, welfare committees and housing sites—once available in the undivided State, have gradually disappeared, they said.

The leaders criticised both the previous BRS government and the present Congress administration for failing to fulfil repeated assurances. “Despite meeting the Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy several times and submitting representations, none of the promises have materialised,” they said. The frequent transfer of Information Commissioners, coupled with the alleged lack of attention from the Minister, has further deepened dissatisfaction among journalists across all 33 districts, the union noted.

The TUWJ said that the government’s indifference has compelled journalists to embark on direct action. The union’s State Executive Committee, which met on November 6, resolved to organise the Maha Dharna to mount pressure on the government.

The key demands include:

• Immediate announcement of a new accreditation policy and issuance of accreditation cards

• Restoration of the health insurance scheme for journalists

• Allotment of house sites to eligible journalists

• Reconstitution of statutory and professional committees

• Support for small and medium newspapers facing financial distress

The union has urged journalists from all districts to participate in the protest in large numbers to “safeguard their rights and ensure long-pending welfare measures are implemented.”
