Small and Medium Newspapers Federation Leaders Meet PCI Chairperson, Seek Justice for Small Publications
New Delhi (Same Day): Representatives of the Small and Medium Newspapers Federation of Telangana met the Press Council of India (PCI) Chairperson Justice (Retd.) Ranjana Prakash Desai in New Delhi on Friday, highlighting the persistent challenges faced by small and Urdu-language newspapers in the state.
The delegation was led by Mohammed Yusuf Uddin, President of the Small and Medium Newspapers Federation Telangana, along with Mohammed Nasiruddin, President of the Small Urdu Newspapers Federation and Editor of Famous City News.
During the meeting, the leaders submitted a formal representation on behalf of the federation, urging the PCI to ensure justice and fair treatment for small newspapers, which they said play a crucial role in grassroots journalism despite limited resources.
The delegation apprised the Chairperson of what they described as the “missiles of difficulties” faced by small and Urdu newspapers — including inadequate government support, advertising disparities, financial strain, and lack of institutional recognition.
They stressed that in Telangana, smaller publications and Urdu-language newspapers continue to struggle for survival despite their significant contribution to local reporting, social awareness, and minority community outreach.
Justice Desai attentively heard the concerns presented by the delegation, who expressed hope that the Press Council would intervene to safeguard the interests of small and medium publications across the state.
The federation leaders stated that they would continue their efforts to bring national attention to the plight of small newspapers and seek structural reforms for their sustainability.
