Patanjali, Two Associates Fined ₹1.4 Lakh for Sub-Standard Ghee in Uttarakhand

Dehradun (Same Day):
The Uttarakhand Food Safety and Drug Administration has imposed a total penalty of ₹1,40,000 on Patanjali Ayurved Limited and two associated businesses after samples of the company’s cow ghee repeatedly failed to meet food safety standards.

Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety R.K. Sharma said the ghee sample was first collected in October 2020 from Karan General Store in Kasni, Pithoragarh, during a routine inspection. Tests conducted at the State Food Laboratory in Rudrapur and later at the National Food Laboratory in Ghaziabad found the product to be sub-standard and potentially harmful for consumption.

Officials issued a notice to Patanjali in 2021, but the company did not respond initially. A re-test was sought later that year, and samples were evaluated again at the central laboratory, where they failed once more. The national-level report, submitted in November 2021, was subsequently reviewed, and the case was presented in court in February 2022.

After examining the evidence submitted by Food Safety Officer Dilip Jain, the Adjudicating Officer and Additional District Magistrate of Pithoragarh, Yogendra Singh, imposed fines of ₹1,00,000 on Patanjali Ayurved Limited (manufacturer), ₹25,000 on Brahma Agency (distributor), and ₹15,000 on Karan General Store (retailer).
