BC Groups Lay Siege to Gandhi Bhavan Over Reduced Panchayat Quota... Demand 42% reservation before conducting Sarpanch elections; leaders detained during protest
Hyderabad (Same Day): Several Backward Classes (BC) organisations on Wednesday staged a protest and laid siege to Gandhi Bhavan, condemning the sharp reduction of BC reservations in the upcoming Panchayat Raj elections. The leaders alleged that the ruling Congress had committed a “betrayal of trust” by drastically cutting the quota compared to the 2019 local body polls.
BC JAC Chairman Jajula Srinivas Goud, leading the protest, demanded that the State government first restore 42% reservations for BCs and only then proceed with the election schedule. He urged Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to lead an all-party delegation to New Delhi to meet the Prime Minister and press for a solution to the ongoing reservation issue. He also insisted that the Congress announce a concrete action plan in Parliament to push for the long-pending BC Bill.
The protest saw the participation of BC JAC leaders Ganesh Chari, Kulkacherla Srinivas, Vikram Goud, Shyam Kurma, Shekhar Sagara, and Veera Swamulu, who criticised the government for “politically executing” BC representation in the current election cycle. They noted that BCs were allotted significantly fewer seats compared to the previous elections.
Tension prevailed as police intervened and detained several leaders who were demonstrating peacefully, shifting them to the Nampally Police Station. The leaders termed the arrests “unjustified and undemocratic” and demanded the immediate release of all detained members.
Warning of intensified agitation, the BC JAC declared that if the government fails to ensure justice and restore the quota, they would be compelled to lay siege to the Chief Minister’s residence in the coming days.
