TGEJAC Passes Unanimous Resolution Demanding Abolition of CPS, Restoration of OPS
Hyderabad (Same Day): In a significant show of solidarity, the Telangana Government Employees Joint Action Committee (TGEJAC) passed a unanimous resolution on Monday demanding the abolition of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) within a year, in line with the State Government's electoral promise, and the immediate restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
The resolution was adopted during a massive meeting held at the RTC Kalyana Mandapam in Hyderabad, which saw participation from over 200 employees’ and teachers’ unions under the TGEJAC umbrella.
TGEJAC Chairman Mr. Maram Jagadeeshwar, addressing the gathering, criticised the CPS introduced on September 1, 2004, saying it failed to provide financial security or social assurance to government employees and their families. “Not a single family has benefited from CPS in 20 years. Despite monthly contributions of ₹450 crore being diverted to the share market, the Government bears no burden or responsibility under this scheme,” he remarked.
He asserted that OPS would not only ensure security for employees post-retirement but also enhance their morale and commitment during service, thereby contributing positively to the development of Telangana.
"Government must act on its promise"
General Secretary Mr. Eluri Srinivas Rao, who introduced the resolution, recalled that the Congress party had restored OPS in four other States and demanded similar action in Telangana. “As promised in its election manifesto, the Government must fulfil its assurance within one year,” he said.
The resolution was passed with unanimous support from all participating associations.
Union leaders express support
CPS Employees’ Union President Sthithapragnya, along with leaders Kalval Srikanth and Naresh Goud, expressed satisfaction over the resolution and reiterated their commitment to continue the agitation until OPS is reinstated. They alleged that the Central Government’s recent introduction of the so-called "Universal Pension Scheme" (UPS) effective from April 1 was merely a rebranded, ineffective version of CPS, offering no real benefits to employees.
“Employees across the country have rejected the UPS model because it fails to ensure pension security. Even after transferring the entire PRAN account to the NPS Trust, service pension decisions remain uncertain,” they said.
Political backing for the movement
MLC Mr. Sripal Reddy, who was present at the meeting, extended his full support to the JAC’s decisions. “Though I am now a legislator, my association with JAC continues, and I stand by the employees in their fight for pension justice,” he stated.
Call for united struggle
UTF President Mr. Chava Ravi and STU President Mr. Sadananda Goud called for a united and sustained movement for the abolition of CPS. “Unity among employees and teachers is the key to victory. Let us all rally together for our rightful demand,” they urged.
The meeting concluded with renewed calls for mass mobilisation, with TGEJAC affirming that the fight for OPS will continue until justice is delivered.
