VHP Demands ₹50 Lakh Compensation for Electrocution Victims' Families
Hyderabad (Same Day): The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has demanded a compensation of ₹50 lakh each for the families of youth who died after coming into contact with live electrical wires during recent religious processions in Telangana. The demand was made by the organisation’s State Prachar Pramukh, Mr. Pagudakula Balaswamy, through an official press statement issued on Wednesday.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incidents, Mr. Balaswamy referred to the tragic loss of six lives during a Shobha Yatra organised in Ramanthapur on the occasion of Sri Krishna Janmashtami. Several others were reportedly injured in the incident. In similar incidents during Vinayaka Chavithi idol processions, three more youths died—two in Balapur (Hyderabad) and one in Kamareddy district—after accidental contact with overhead electric cables.
Holding the electricity department responsible, Mr. Balaswamy alleged gross negligence on the part of officials in failing to either replace or properly secure low-hanging and outdated power lines. "These deaths are a direct result of poorly maintained infrastructure and the authorities’ inability to act despite clear risks," he said.
He demanded that each bereaved family be given a compensation of ₹50 lakh and that one eligible member from each family be offered a government job. Furthermore, he criticised TGSPDCL CMD Mr. Musharraf Ali Faruqui for what he called an “irresponsible and dismissive” attitude towards the severity of the incidents.
"Minimising the tragedy not only disrespects the victims but also amounts to undermining the sentiments of the Hindu community," he stated, urging the government to take immediate disciplinary action against officials responsible for the lapses, including suspension of those who failed to act.
With major Hindu festivals such as Vinayaka Navaratri, Dasara, Diwali, and Bathukamma approaching, Mr. Balaswamy stressed the urgent need for all departments to make adequate safety arrangements. He warned the State government against any form of negligence towards Hindu festivals, stating that such apathy would not be tolerated by the public.
