TJA Proposes the Joint Action Committee to Address Issues of Small and Medium Newspapers

Hyderabad (Same Day):
The Telangana Journalists Association (TJA), Greater Hyderabad Unit, has proposed the formation of a Joint Action Committee (JAC) to address the pressing issues faced by small and medium newspapers across the state. The committee is expected to comprise editors, publishers, and union representatives from various small and medium print publications.

In a statement issued on Sunday, TJA Vice President Muhammad Asad Ali called upon stakeholders to unite under a common platform to collectively press for their long-pending demands. Chief among these concerns is the non-payment of advertisement bills by the Telangana State Government, which have reportedly been delayed for several months.

The pending dues lie with both the Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Department and the Finance Department, with no clear timeline provided by the government for their clearance. The TJA alleges that the delay has severely impacted the operations and sustainability of many small and medium publications.

"This is not just a financial issue but a matter of survival for many newspapers that are already operating with limited resources," Mr. Asad Ali said. "Despite repeated assurances, the government has failed to act, forcing us to consider more decisive steps."

The proposed JAC will chalk out a future course of action, including organising meetings, setting deadlines, and, if required, launching protests and dharnas to demand attention from the authorities.

The Association also criticised the State Government for failing to fulfil promises made to journalists during the last Assembly elections. "What was promised was a better standard of living and support for the journalistic community. What we are witnessing is negligence and apathy," Mr. Ali added.

The TJA has urged all concerned parties to attend an upcoming consultative meeting, where the framework for the JAC and its immediate action plan will be finalised.
