Prof. Kodandaram, Azharuddin nominated to Legislative Council under Governor’s quota... Reventh's decission is appreciated... —Kappati Panduranga Reddy
Hyderabad (Same Day): In a move that is being widely viewed as both symbolic and strategic, the Telangana Cabinet, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, has recommended the nomination of Telangana movement stalwart Prof. M. Kodandaram and former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin to the State Legislative Council under the Governor’s quota. The recommendations have been sent to the Governor for approval.
Prof. Kodandaram, a retired professor of political science and former chairman of the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC), played a pivotal role in the statehood movement. Known for mobilising support across various social and political groups, he later floated his own political outfit, the Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS), maintaining an independent ideological stance distinct from major regional parties.
Mr. Azharuddin, currently a senior leader in the Congress party and former Member of Parliament from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, served as Working President of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee. Apart from his political innings, he is celebrated for his leadership of the Indian cricket team during the 1990s and is credited with efforts to engage youth and minorities in the party's fold.
Reacting to the nominations, former Chairman of the Ranga Reddy District Library Committee, Kappati Panduranga Reddy, welcomed the Cabinet’s decision, terming it a “recognition of intellectuals and long-standing party loyalists.”
“The nomination of Prof. Kodandaram, despite political targeting in the past, signifies a restoration of democratic respect,” he said. “The inclusion of leaders like Prof. Kodandaram and Mr. Azharuddin sends a clear message to party cadres — that commitment to public causes and the organisation will eventually be recognised.”
Panduranga Reddy suggests that the nominations underscore the Congress government's intent to reach out to diverse sections of society and bring seasoned voices into the policymaking process.
