Owaisi Slams PM Modi for Praising RSS in Independence Day Address
Hyderabad (Same Day): AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for lauding the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during his Independence Day address, calling it "an insult to the freedom struggle."
Speaking to media, Mr. Owaisi said that the Prime Minister's decision to glorify the RSS from the ramparts of the Red Fort was "deeply inappropriate" and amounted to “rewriting history at the cost of truth.”
"On the 79th Independence Day, the Prime Minister chose to celebrate an organisation that was absent from the freedom movement, opposed Mahatma Gandhi’s vision, and continues to promote a sectarian ideology," Mr. Owaisi said. "If he wanted to praise the RSS, he could have done so from Nagpur — not the Red Fort, which symbolises India’s plural and constitutional ethos."
During his address, Mr. Modi had referred to the RSS as “the world’s largest NGO,” applauding its role in "nation-building" and "social service" over the past 100 years. The remark has since drawn strong reactions from several Opposition leaders, who argue that the Sangh and its ideological affiliates had no role in India’s anti-colonial struggle.
Mr. Owaisi further alleged that the RSS’s vision was antithetical to the inclusive nationalism espoused by the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, B.R. Ambedkar, and Subhash Chandra Bose. "Praising such an organisation on Independence Day dishonours those who laid down their lives for a secular, democratic India," he added.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief also questioned the government’s commitment to constitutional values, asserting that repeated attempts were being made to "saffronise public memory" and undermine the contributions of freedom fighters not aligned with the ruling party’s ideological leanings.
