Calligraphy Workshop Held at Dawn High School, Malakpet; Certificate Courses to be Launched Soon Calligraphy is most useful to Urdu Journalists
Hyderabad (Same Day): A well-attended introductory workshop on the art of calligraphy organised at Dawn High School, Malakpet. The event, curated under the guidance of Mr. Fazl-ur-Rahman Khurram, Chairman of Dawn High School, witnessed enthusiastic participation from calligraphy enthusiasts, students, and members of the community.
Renowned calligrapher and art educator Mr. Ghause Arslan addressed the gathering and highlighted the significance of calligraphy as both an artistic and cultural pursuit. “Calligraphy is an embodiment of aesthetics, balance, refinement, and creativity. It not only nurtures one's artistic skills but also serves as a medium for the expression of inner beauty and discipline,” he said.
Mr. Arslan, who has been associated with the art of calligraphy for over four decades, shared insights into the historical evolution of the script. Tracing its origins, he referred to early inscriptions found in ancient civilizations and cited contributions by Ibn Muqla in the 4th century Hijri, who systematised six major scripts including Naskh, Thuluth, Tawqi, Riq‘ah, Rayhan, and Muhaqqaq.
He further noted that the development of Arabic script in the Indian subcontinent was significantly influenced by the arrival of Arab traders, and that calligraphy later evolved into a refined art during the Islamic golden period. “The art has captivated the world — from India to Saudi Arabia and even Iran, where calligraphic works are revered,” he added.
Earlier, veteran broadcaster Mr. Shajiullah Farasat welcomed Mr. Arslan and commended his lifelong commitment to calligraphy and Urdu journalism. “Mr. Arslan has elevated the art form through both print media and penmanship, making an indelible mark on national and international platforms,” he said.
Mr. Fazl-ur-Rahman Khurram announced that Dawn High School will soon launch regular calligraphy classes, which will culminate in a formal certificate course. “Following a consultative meeting, we aim to initiate structured training sessions for students and art lovers alike,” he said.
Artist Mr. Mohammed Rafiuddin also displayed some of his renowned artworks, drawing appreciation from the attendees.
Several distinguished guests graced the occasion, including Dr. Abid Muaz, Ms. Atiya Fatima, Mr. Mohammed Husamuddin Riaz, Ms. Arifa Begum, Mr. Nizamuddin Farooqui, Dr. Saeed Nawaz, and Engineer Ibrahim Iqbal, among others. The school faculty and staff, including Mr. Rashid Hashmi and Ms. Nusrat Fatima, also played a vital role in coordinating the event.
The workshop concluded with an interactive Question and Answer session where Mr. Ghause Arslan responded to audience queries regarding techniques, tools, and the future of calligraphy in the digital age.
