BC Welfare Association Demands All-Party Meeting on Reservations
Hyderabad (Same Day): The National President of the BC Welfare Association, Mr. Jajula Srinivas Goud, on Thursday urged the Telangana State Government to immediately convene an all-party meeting involving political parties, BC organisations, intellectuals, and civil society representatives to deliberate on the issue of BC reservations.
In a statement released to the media, Mr. Goud appealed to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to take forward the legislation to enhance BC reservations only after holding wide consultations. He emphasised that the recent bill passed in the Telangana Assembly, proposing 42% reservations for Backward Classes in education, employment, and political sectors, received unanimous support from all parties. However, he criticised the BJP for allegedly adopting a dual stance by not supporting the bill in Parliament.
Mr. Goud accused the BJP of spreading misinformation, particularly by creating confusion among BC communities with misleading claims about 10% Muslim reservations. He called for a united front from all political parties and BC stakeholders to expose the BJP’s alleged duplicity and to exert pressure on the Centre for the implementation of the enhanced quota.
Commenting on reports that the upcoming State Cabinet meeting scheduled for August 18 might finalise decisions related to local body elections, Mr. Goud said the government must issue a clear statement. He warned against moving forward with the elections without first addressing the reservation issue.
Though the power to legislate BC reservation enhancement lies with the Central Government, Mr. Goud criticised BJP leaders for demanding that the State first implement the increased quotas before conducting elections. He likened this approach to "the thief lecturing the policeman", and reiterated that the State Government should formulate a clear roadmap to implement enhanced BC quotas before proceeding with local elections.
"The government must prioritise social justice before electoral processes," Mr. Goud added.
