Week-long Campaign to Promote Urdu Signboards Begins Today in Telangana
Hyderabad (Same Day): A statewide campaign titled “Urdu Signboard Week” is set to commence from July 25 across Telangana, with a special focus on Hyderabad. The initiative, aimed at ensuring the visibility of Urdu on official signage at government offices, banks, and public institutions, is spearheaded by Syed Mujtaba Abedi, Chairman of the Telangana Urdu Council and senior Congress leader.
As part of the campaign, the Telangana Urdu Council, under Mr. Abedi’s leadership, will engage with heads of various government departments and banking institutions to encourage the installation of Urdu signage alongside Telugu and English.
Earlier, following Mr. Abedi’s representation, Urdu signboards were installed at the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) headquarters at Gandhi Bhavan, as well as at the Azampura Post Office and other public offices. The council aims to extend these efforts to more institutions during the week-long campaign.
Letters of appeal and reminders have been sent to key state leadership including Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Government Advisor Mohammed Ali Shabbir, and TPCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud, urging them to support the inclusion of Urdu in official signage.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Abedi also appealed to parents and guardians to encourage their children to learn Urdu. “It is vital that we safeguard and promote our linguistic heritage. Purchasing and reading Urdu newspapers is one such way to ensure the language thrives,” he said.
The campaign has been widely appreciated by language rights activists and community leaders, who view it as a significant step towards the preservation and promotion of Urdu in Telangana’s public life.
