OBC Leaders Demand Reservation in Legislatures, Separate Ministry at Centre

New Delhi (Same Day):
A national-level seminar on Other Backward Classes (OBCs), held at the Andhra Pradesh Bhavan’s Gurajada Conference Hall in New Delhi, witnessed a strong demand for legislative reservations for OBCs and the establishment of a dedicated OBC Ministry at the Centre.

Organised under the leadership of B.C. Welfare Association of Andhra Pradesh President B. Durga Naresh Yadav, the seminar was attended by representatives of 36 OBC organisations, 28 caste-based associations, and 32 employees’ unions from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.

The roundtable discussion was coordinated by Karri Venu Madhav, Delhi in-charge and spokesperson of the National OBC Welfare Association, with national convener Gujja Krishna also present.

Prominent parliamentarians in attendance included Rajya Sabha MP R. Krishnaiah, Congress MP Mallu Ravi, BJP MP Pakala Satyanarayana, TDP’s Beeda Mastan Rao, and former MP V. Hanumantha Rao. Suraj Mandal, grandson of B.P. Mandal (author of the Mandal Commission Report), and VC Karunanidhi also participated.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Krishnaiah strongly advocated for increased political representation for OBCs through reservations in legislative bodies and emphasized the need for a dedicated Union Ministry for OBC affairs to address longstanding issues faced by backward communities across India.

Other notable attendees included Telangana BC Welfare Association General Secretary Tangellamudi Nandagopal, women leader Bonu Sharada, Telangana Congress Vice President Jagadishwara Rao, and BC leaders Murali Krishnamachari, Srinivas Venkataramana, Renu, and Sharath Prakash.

The seminar also saw intense deliberations on the Creamy Layer policy, with many leaders urging a review of current criteria to ensure equitable access to welfare schemes for the most disadvantaged groups within the OBC community.

Organisers reiterated their commitment to intensifying the OBC movement in the coming months to secure constitutional and administrative safeguards.

“The time has come for a stronger, united voice from the OBC communities. We must push forward to ensure that our rightful demands are met,” Mr. Krishnaiah stated.
