Dr. Gopalakrishnan takes charge as Divisional Railway Manager of Secunderabad Division
Hyderabad (Same Day): Dr. R. Gopalakrishnan, a 1998-batch officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), assumed charge as the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of the Secunderabad Division under South Central Railway.
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Gopalakrishnan served as the Additional Divisional Railway Manager in the same division. With an academic background that spans top global institutions, he holds a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Delhi, an MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi University, and a Ph.D. in Engineering Systems and Design from the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Gopalakrishnan has held several pivotal roles in Indian Railways. Notably, he managed critical operational and commercial responsibilities in the complex Mumbai Suburban Railway network and later led petroleum logistics at the Railway Board. A major milestone in his career was the establishment of the Indian Railways Data Analytics Unit, which he headed for five years. Under his leadership, the unit developed AI and data strategies aimed at improving passenger services, freight operations, staff optimization, infrastructure planning, materials management, and track maintenance.
Dr. Gopalakrishnan was also instrumental in conceptualizing India’s first National Household Travel Survey (NHTS), which covered over 4.8 lakh households across various states. The survey, currently being implemented by the National Survey Organization, is expected to play a significant role in shaping future transport policy.
His contributions further include developing algorithms for freight discounting in low-demand routes, optimizing seat capacity in reserved trains, and automating freight terminal allocations. He also served on a national-level committee assessing junction capacity for Indian Railways.
Beyond administration, Dr. Gopalakrishnan is a respected academic and researcher. He has published extensively in reputed international journals and has taught doctoral-level courses on transport demand modeling at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. He has held visiting research positions at the Intelligent Transportation Systems Lab at MIT, USA, and the Center for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation, and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) at IISc.
His appointment is expected to bring a strong blend of strategic thinking, technical expertise, and innovation to the Secunderabad Division.
