Stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium: Owaisi Calls for Judicial Probe into Tragedy
Hyderabad (Same Day): In the aftermath of the deadly stampede at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, AIMIM President, MP Barrister Asaduddin Owaisi has voiced strong concern and demanded a judicially monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident that claimed at least 12 lives and injured over 30 people.
The tragedy occurred on June 4 during a celebratory event marking Royal Challengers Bangalore’s historic IPL victory. According to officials, more than three lakh people gathered outside the stadium, which has a seating capacity of just 35,000. The overwhelming turnout led to chaos, resulting in a stampede as fans surged to gain entry.
In a statement, Owaisi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and criticized the lack of adequate planning and crowd control measures. “This is not merely a lapse in judgment but a grave administrative failure. A judicially monitored investigation is the only way to ensure transparency and justice for the victims,” he said.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah acknowledged that the crowd far exceeded expectations and attributed the mismanagement to the short notice of the event, which was announced just hours after the IPL final. He assured that an internal inquiry was underway and compensation would be provided to the victims' families.
Meanwhile, opposition parties have held the state government responsible, calling the tragedy preventable. BJP leaders accused the administration of negligence and questioned the rationale behind allowing a mass gathering without adequate safety arrangements.
As the city reels from the loss, civil society and political leaders have united in calling for accountability and comprehensive reforms in the handling of public events to prevent future disasters.
