Congress Reiterates Commitment to Urdu Promotion, Minority Welfare: Shabbir Ali

Mahabubnagar (Same Day): Reaffirming the Congress government's commitment to linguistic and cultural inclusivity, Telangana Government Advisor Mohammed Ali Shabbir on Monday laid the foundation stone for a five-storey Urdu Ghar-cum-Hajj House in Mahabubnagar. Speaking at the event held at the Urdu Ghar premises behind the Haji Ghaffar petrol pump, Shabbir Ali described the initiative as part of the broader "Telangana model" that emphasizes community-oriented development. “This project is not merely for Mahabubnagar; it reflects the inclusive and secular vision of the Congress government,” he remarked.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Mahabubnagar MLA Y. Srinivas Reddy, Minority Finance Corporation Chairman Obedullah Kotwal, MLC Amer Ali Khan, Waqf Board Chairman Syed Azmatullah Hussaini, Urdu Academy Chairman Tahir Bin Hamdan, and other senior officials from the minority welfare sector.

Decline in Urdu Education...

Shabbir Ali expressed concern over the dwindling popularity of Urdu among students, pointing out that many junior colleges no longer offer the language due to poor enrollment. “Even institutions like Osmania University are witnessing a sharp decline in Urdu admissions,” he noted, adding that the community must introspect and take responsibility for this trend. He highlighted a growing disconnect between cultural engagement and educational participation. “While we flock to qawwalis and mushairas, many Urdu-medium and minority schools are struggling with low student strength,” he observed.

Call for Educational Focus...

Drawing attention to the underutilisation of minority educational institutions, he cited the example of TMREIS schools where 65% of seats are reserved for Muslim students, yet many go unfilled. Emphasizing the centrality of education in Islam, he invoked the Quranic directive "Iqra" (Read), urging parents and youth to prioritise learning.

Backing Muslim Reservation with Data...

Referring to the recently concluded Telangana caste survey, Shabbir Ali asserted that the Congress government now possesses credible socio-economic data to defend the 4% Muslim reservation in the Supreme Court. “The survey reveals that Muslims constitute 12.58% of the State’s population, with 10.08% belonging to backward categories,” he said, adding that the policy has already benefited over 22 lakh Muslims across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

He recalled the original implementation of a 5% quota under former Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy in 2004, which was subsequently adjusted to 4% in compliance with judicial guidelines.

Appeal Against Social Ills...

Shabbir Ali also used the occasion to address social issues within the community, particularly the persistence of dowry and extravagant weddings, which he said are adversely affecting poor families. “We often debate global politics, but overlook the economic hardships of our own neighbours,” he said.

In his concluding remarks, he called upon the community to embrace simplicity, educational empowerment, and collective progress. “Our true strength lies in unity, knowledge, and our willingness to uplift one another,” he stated.
