Pre-emptive Arrests of Activists Undemocratic, Says Kappati Panduranga Reddy

Hyderabad (Same Day):
Condemning the pre-emptive arrests and house detention of Telangana movement activists, senior leader Kappati Panduranga Reddy on Monday termed the actions “undemocratic and unethical,” alleging that the government is curbing the fundamental right to protest.

Mr. Reddy, who is also the Telangana Jagruti Ranga Reddy district president and a former chairman of the district library body, criticised the authorities for detaining activists at their residences ahead of planned protests. He said such measures reflected an attempt to suppress dissent rather than address the concerns raised by those who had played a role in the Statehood movement.

Addressing the media, he questioned the rationale behind early morning detentions. “What message does the government intend to send by visiting activists’ homes at dawn and placing them under house arrest? Is this what is meant by ‘people’s governance’?” he asked, adding that silencing voices of protest would not ensure effective administration.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the alleged delay in fulfilling promises, Mr. Reddy said that even two years after assuming office, the Congress government had failed to implement assurances made to activists prior to the elections. He argued that resorting to arrests instead of resolving issues pointed to administrative inadequacy.

Recalling the sacrifices made during the Telangana movement, he noted that the State was achieved through the efforts of martyrs and thousands of activists. “Those who are now in positions of power must introspect. It is not appropriate to act against the very activists who contributed to the formation of the State,” he said.

Mr. Reddy urged the government to abandon what he described as a rigid approach and to immediately honour its commitments to activists. He warned that disregarding their sentiments could invite a strong response in the future.
