World Spelling Bee champion Faizan Zaki felicitated in Hyderabad

Hyderabad (Same Day):
World Spelling Bee champion Faizan Zaki, who lives in Texas, was felicitated at a special programme organised by the Media Plus Foundation in Hyderabad on Saturday during his first visit to the city after his historic win at the 2025 Scripts National Spelling Bee.

The felicitation event, held at the Media Plus auditorium, opened with the screening of a video capturing Faizan’s winning moment at the prestigious global competition held in May. The young champion received an enthusiastic and emotional welcome from academicians, intellectuals and educationists present on the occasion.

Speaking at the gathering, Faizan underlined the importance of consistency, sustained practice and strong parental support in achieving success at the international level. His parents, Indian-Americans originally from Hyderabad, shared that they had put their careers on hold for nearly six years to support their son’s preparation. His mother, Dr. Arshia, is a graduate of Gandhi Medical College and a practising doctor in Texas, while his father is engaged in the real estate business.

Adding to the excitement, Faizan re-spelt his championship-winning word, “éclaircissement,” for the audience and confidently responded to requests for challenging words, drawing applause from attendees.

In recognition of his exceptional academic achievement and global distinction, the Media Plus Foundation conferred the Heroes Award on Faizan Zaki. The citation described his success as “a journey rooted in Hyderabad and shaped on a global stage, inspiring young minds across borders.”

Dr. Altaf Akbar, Director of Dr. Akbar Eye Superspecialty Hospitals, said that such an achievement is extremely rare, noting that the competition allowed no margin for error. He emphasised that even a single incorrect spelling could result in elimination.

Several speakers suggested that the government should formally acknowledge and honour Faizan for bringing international recognition to the country.

Former Law Minister Asif Pasha attended the programme as the chief guest. Other prominent attendees included Dr. Nazia Afrose, Sultan-ul-Uloom Education Society secretary Zafar Javeed, Syed Aneesuddin, Chairman of Sahayata Trust, Fazl Ur Rahaman Khurram, Chairman Dawn Group of Schools, Dr. Mushtaq Ali, Chairman Faith Hospital, Dr. Faisal Mustafa and senior Congress leader Khaleequr Rahman. The programme was compered by Syed Khaled Shahbaaz.

Faizan’s grandmother, Noorani Begum, was also present at the event, sharing a proud and emotional moment with her grandson.
