Jagga Reddy accuses BJP of attempting to erase the legacy of freedom fighters

Sangareddy (Same Day):
Senior Congress leader Jagga Reddy on Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of attempting to “erase the legacy” of Mahatma Gandhi and the Nehru–Gandhi family from public memory, including an alleged move to remove Mahatma Gandhi’s portrait from Indian currency notes.

Addressing party workers after hoisting the Congress flag at the Sangareddy Congress office on the occasion of the party’s 141st foundation day, Mr. Reddy alleged that the BJP is pursuing a systematic campaign to undermine the contributions of leaders associated with India’s freedom struggle. He said Mahatma Gandhi, Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru and several others had led the independence movement through peaceful means to secure freedom and democratic rights for the people.

Referring to Jawaharlal Nehru’s role in the Constituent Assembly, Mr. Reddy said that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, as Law Minister in Nehru’s Cabinet, drafted the Constitution to ensure equality and freedoms for people of all castes and religions. He also recalled that Jawaharlal Nehru spent nearly 12 years in prison during the freedom movement and that Indira Gandhi too faced imprisonment in the course of her political life.

Mr. Reddy criticised the BJP leadership for questioning the contribution of Jawaharlal Nehru to the nation, stating that leaders of the ruling party had no role in the freedom struggle. “At the time of Independence, many of them were not even born,” he remarked, adding that it was “strange” for the BJP to comment on the sacrifices made by freedom fighters.

He further alleged that the BJP is deliberately targeting the Gandhi and Nehru families and attempting to prevent their names from being remembered by future generations. “The people of the country must take note of these attempts to distort history,” he said.

Asserting that political stability and protection of democratic rights were possible only under Congress leadership, Mr. Reddy said that Rahul Gandhi’s leadership is essential for ensuring peace, rights and social justice for citizens.

Drawing a comparison between the two parties, he said the Congress, founded over 140 years ago, was being lectured on values by the BJP, which was only about four decades old. “The BJP is trying to trample upon history and rewrite the narrative despite having no role in the freedom struggle,” he alleged.

Several local Congress leaders, including Nirmala Jaggareddy, were present at the event.
