Owaisi Slams ECI Over Abrupt Electoral Roll Revision, Alleges Risk of Voter Harassment

Hyderabad (Same Day):
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi criticised the Election Commission of India (ECI) for what he described as an “abrupt” and “arbitrary” revision of electoral rolls ahead of a crucial Assembly election.

Talking to social media, Mr. Owaisi stated on X (formerly Twitter): “The Election Commission abruptly started an ‘intensive revision’ of electoral rolls right before a critical assembly election. It has shifted goalposts: first demanding documentation & then just asking for enumeration forms. Voters will be susceptible to abuse & extortion just because they don’t satisfy the ECI’s arbitrary list of documentary proof of citizenship.”

He alleged that such inconsistencies raise serious concerns about procedural fairness and transparency. “This exercise, carried out without adequate public notice or clarity, disproportionately impacts poor and marginalised citizens who often lack ready access to formal documentation,” he added.

Mr. Owaisi linked the development to a broader atmosphere of mistrust stemming from earlier exercises such as the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and debates surrounding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which have drawn criticism from civil rights groups for potentially targeting minority communities.

While the ECI has yet to respond officially to the allegations, officials had earlier termed the revision exercise a routine update aimed at cleaning the rolls and ensuring a more accurate voter base.

Political observers note that the timing of the revision, so close to the anticipated Assembly polls, could further fuel suspicions about electoral neutrality.

Mr. Owaisi called on the Election Commission to clarify the rationale behind the abrupt procedural shift and to ensure that no eligible citizen is denied their right to vote due to bureaucratic ambiguities.
